THE HORMONE SURVIVAL GUIDE FOR PERIMENOPAUSE:
BALANCE YOUR HORMONES NATURALLY

Reviewed for Denise's Pieces by Denise M. Clark
January 2004

Think of this book as an "Everything You Wanted to Know About..." hormones and perimenopause (and menopause, for that matter), for it truly is. Whether you're a woman or a significant other, this book is filled with a wealth of well-researched and formatted information to help women deal with the issues, feelings, and physical symptoms of that mysterious condition known as "The Change." Actually, what many people don't know, including women, is that menopause is the stage reached after one has experienced all the changes during this natural, if bothersome, aging process. It's the weeks, months, and years leading to that diagnosis that give most women the problem.

Author and Ph.D. Nisha Jackson offers her vast experience and expertise in this gem of a book that offers viable suggestions and natural remedies to help alleviate some of the symptoms of this sometimes hard-to-deal-with cycle of never-ending changes and discomforts that many women suffer. This book also helps clear the fog of confusion many women feel about hormones, hormone replacement therapy and the sometimes uncontrollable emotions experienced by women at various stages of the process.

Using a friendly, personable writing style, the author covers such topics as hormones, testing, how to balance those erratic buggers such as testosterone and estrogen via synthetic or natural methods. She also shows how food, exercise, and stress affect your hormones at this critical time. Nothing is left out; headaches, hair, hot flashes, night sweats, sex... it's all covered. Best of all, she offers a short, three-month plan to get a grip on this roller coaster ride, leaving the individual in control, not some microscopic organism that is impossible to see, though its power is certainly felt on a daily basis.

Appendixes covering vitamins, herbs, and even hormone-testing facilities complete this plethora of information, including a list of books to read if this one doesn't quite fit your needs, which seems doubtful. While many women don't even want to discuss the subject of PMS, perimenopause, or menopause, it is a condition that is inescapable, and for any woman or the loved one of someone going through this traumatic change, this book will offer not only comfort, but guidance as well. With Doctor Jackson's help, this "condition" can be bested, and she gives each of us the tools to make it happen. This book is a rare offering that should not be overlooked. And better yet, it's written by a woman, for women.
